Welcome on the website of the Dutch Kumi Hospital Foundation (for the latest news)
The foundation has been established in 2004 by Cindy van Crugten and Steffie Mooren.
Both work as a midwive at the Midwifery practice Roermond.
For one month during the summer of 2003, they have worked at the hospital in Kumi, Eastern Uganda.
Kumi hospital is a small, general hospital.
The purpose of the visit was to experience the midwifery care in a developing country.
It has been a great, but above all impressive experience.
Due to the prevailing poverty, Uganda faces a high rate of mother and child mortality in midwifery care. Also other medical care is limited due to the lack of funds and resources. At the same time, HIV/Aids, tuberculosis and leprosy are still frequently occurring problems.
This made them to decide to support the hospital financially to, first and foremost, improve the midwifery care, but besides that also the medical care and facilities. In the autumn of 2004, they visited Kumi for a second time and put the first project ideas into development.
From 2005 on, Steffie Mooren continues the foundation and pays a working visit to Kumi Hospital every year during her holidays.
Due to the support of the foundation the hospital has been able to carry through some positive changes which have improved the midwifery care significantly. More about this you can read on this website.
The latest visit to Kumi took place in September 2008. The complete travel report can be found under ‘News’.
The next visit to Kumi will take place in April 2010.
Steffie and sun, including a team of the Dutch local tv station TROS, will make a documentary about the work of the foundation for the tv programme “mother and sun”, which will be broadcasted end of May.
