Container on the way to Kumi
The foundation received a fantastic chance to transport goods to Kumi! On Monday 26 October a container of 12 meters filled with all kinds of useful stuff left for Kumi. On October 30th the container left the harbor of Antwerp oversea to Mombasa, Kenya. The trip will take about 35 days, where at arrival the container will be transported by truck all the way to Kumi. We hope the container will reach Kumi before Christmas!
It considers a private initiative, which happily surprised the foundation. Their motivation you can find as cited below:
Hi Steffie. As you might know we have been in Africa before and decided at that point to mean something to these people in the future. We are convinced that small scale projects that are directly pursuable are the right way for us to support. Your information and you as a person appealed to us in particular. Besides that I believe in concurrence of circumstances and encountering people without having organized this. You know yourself that your and our good intentions almost vanished into smoke until I by coincidence caught sight of the bed company and everything went without a hitch. This is what is meant with believing in, pulling the strings yourself and having the right people at the right time at the right place. Our drive is seeing happy people in the organization as well as the receivers. This empowers us to invest energy and financial resources. We cannot wait to see the video or pictures of the moment the container will be emptied, because what can be more fantastic to make people happy and with that making them more self-sufficient and independent of healthcare and touching techniques in the heart of the matter. A lot of greetings and love, Roger and Marijke and the kids.
The container is filled with: 27 beds, mattresses and night tables from the company Schell Industries BV in Belfeld, maternity packages from the Babyhope Foundation, practice instruments from the doctor’s practice Steyl, laboratory items, examination bench, operation table, paediatric instruments and disposables form the Laurentius Hospital Roermond, dentist instruments from dentist Weert, playground equipment of Beatrixhout (bought from donation De Regter Esser), various articles from Mr. Present Swalmen, wheeled strollers and crutches from Kersten Revalidatie, midwifery instruments donated by Helene van Riel, tennis balls from Sportcentrum Swalmen and a plunge pump from Boerenbond Swalmen.
With thanks to above mentioned companies and individuals, and especially to the initiators!! Kumi can look forward to a great Christmas present….

Donation Jewelry studio Regter-Esser
Last September 19 and 20 Jewelry studio Regter-Esser held a twosome open days. Many interested people found their way to the renowned studio. During those days paintings of Rob Verstappen, José Verstappen, Rietje Geurts and Phonse van Daalen were exhibited in the historical city garden as well as inside the studio. Every year the studio donates a part of the turnover of the open days to a charity. This year again Kumi was happy to receive a cheque of € 1250,-. In agreement with Rob Verstappen this money will be used for purchasing playground equipment for the children department of Kumi Hospital. This playground equipment (i.e. swings, slides and see-saws) and are currently on the way to Kumi in a sponsored sea-container.

Raise Lent action 2009 Lambertus parish
At the end of October the € 5000,- raised during the Lent action of the Lambertus parish has been transferred to Kumi. The money will be used to buy several good milk cows for the Kumi farm. The hospital recently cultivated some land and sow grass for its new residents. Currently a proper fence is being installed to prevent the milk cows to get in contact the local cows which might possibly carry diseases. An agrarian from Swalmen will advice on which cows to buy, to ensure the best possible result!
Book fair Vincentius Association
The Association Book fair Vincentius has donated more than € 300,- to Kumi. Besides the fact that the association supports our foundation financially for 4 years (annually € 4250,-) they also raise and donate money in this way. Their contribution of the last 2 years has been spent on building and furnishing the operation room. By purchasing obstetric instruments for traditional midwifes in the direct surroundings of Kumi Hospital we want to improve the quality of care outside the hospital. Lack of hygiene is the biggest reason of mother-and-child mortality. Buying for example mattresses, lamps and boots can simplify the way of work. Education and information are other significant factors which are already provided for by the hospital.
Q-Park supports Kumi Charity Christmas 2009
Chief editor | 11-09-2009
Also this year the employees of Q-Park can choose for a Christmas box or a charitable cause. As works council we have chosen together with the board of directors for the following charity:
The charity our employees can donate to is the Kumi Foundation.
This foundation has been founded in 2004, by Cindy van Crugten and Steffie Mooren. Both work as midwives. For one month during the summer of 2003 they worked in the local hospital in Kumi (East Uganda). Kumi Hospital is a small, general hospital. Their goal was to gain experience in maternal care in a developing country. It has been a wonderful, but above all impressive experience. Due to the prevailing poverty, the country suffers from a high mother-and-child mortality rate. Also the rest of the medical care is limited because of a lack of money and resources. At the same time HIV/Aids, TBC and leprosy are still often occurring problems.
This has made them decide to support the hospital financially to, in the first place, improve the midwifery care and besides that the medical care and facilities.
In the autumn of 2004 they visited Kumi once again and that is when plans started to be developed. Since 2005 Steffie continues the foundation and pays a working visit to Kumi every year during her holiday.
Throughout the last years the delivery rooms, maternity and pregnant ward have been improved, solar panels have been purchased for permanent light supply and a new operation room for midwifery and gynaecology has been built and furnished. These positive changes have been made possible by support of the foundation through which the midwifery care already improved significantly. More information can be found on its website.
Steffie’s last visit took place in April 2009.
As works council we choose this charitable foundation because we find it a very good specific cause where our contribution directly ends up with the people who need it. Our contribution really cares! We therefore hope many of you will choose the option Charity!

Spinning marathon Swalmen: note it down already 23 April 2010
Sportcentrum Swalmen came up with the great initiative to organize a 24-hour spinning marathon for Kumi Hospital on the 23th of April 2010.
Teams existing out of 4 to 6 persons can sign up for this marathon. Each team needs to find sponsors for this event to sponsor the tuition fee of € 200. For this amount the team receives among other things drinks and a pasta meal during the 24 hours. Every 2 hours the person spinning will be changed as well as the spinning instructor.
The gain of these 24-hours goes towards the child health centre of Kumi Hospital.
More information about the marathon will be posted on this site soon. It promises to be a very exciting event!
Operation Room put in operation (foto opening OK + inrichting OK + foto’s lampen en autoclaaf, daarbij klein nog even de logo’s van Albert Heijn, Wilde Ganzen en NCDO)
After a celebratory opening of the operation room, Kumi Hospital had to wait a little while before the new operation room could actually be used. The operation lighting and autoclave (for sterilizing medical tools) were not present yet. In the meantime those instruments have arrived and are installed which means the operation room can be used!
This project has also been successfully accomplished by the great financial support of Albert Heijn Swalmen and Wilde Ganzen/NCDO.
Buy a goat
Since 3 years, besides improving the obstetric care in Kumi Hospital, the foundation also provides direct aid to the poorest.
Families with a mentally and/or physically disabled child are visited during outreaches (see: how further). It considers the poorest families who do not have the means to get to the hospital themselves.
Having a goat in Uganda means a lot more than ‘just having a goat’. A female goat can produce milk, which is a nutritional source. She can also bring offspring which can be sold or given to other family members. For selling about 8 goats the people can buy 1 cow. A cow produces more milk than a goat and therefore offers more opportunities.
A goat costs about € 30 to € 35, depending on where the people exactly live in Kumi District. The goats are bought by Kumi’s fieldworkers to ensure the money will not be spend on other things. Attached you will find pictures made by a fieldworker of the hospital, with some goats and their owners on it.
Do you want to buy a goat? Please transfer the money to account number 1503.92.893, attn Stichting Kumi Hospital Uganda, in Swalmen, stating ‘goat’.

Companies Imtech and Linisol Isolatie b.v. support Kumi!
Paediatrician Janneke Raaymakers was happy to receive a donation of 1300 Euro from the companies Imtech and Linisol. With this gesture both companies want to show their sympathy for the foundation. We will discuss with them what goal the donation will be spent on. On the photo Janneke receives the cheque from Imtech. The persons present have watched the L1 movie about Kumi first. Hereafter they proceeded the day actively with a nice game of golf.
